Technology transfer, driven by the needs of users, is an aspect of underground infrastructure engineering in which Jason Consultants has assisted many customers.

Technology transfer frequently follows from a technology review project. A global review of technologies and performance achieved using them, on behalf of an industry grouping or an individual client, almost inevitably identifies certain specific technologies that provide elegant and cost-effective solutions to clients’ problems. The technology transfer process comprises several steps to bring this to realisation and for both the client and the vendor of the technology to benefit through greater use of an innovation.

Our technology transfer programmes follow the initial review stage with proving trials to identify whether and how the technology needs to be changed to perform effectively in the client’s environment, often under challenging operational conditions different from the method’s origins. Adaptation is often needed to accommodate the different demands made by new conditions and environments. Successful completion of proving trials meeting the needs of all parties leads to initial field deployment and establishment of commercial channels to supply the technology in the client’s market.

This is a stage of especially close co-operation between vendor, client and Jason Consultants. A client is essentially pulling the vendor into the market, and a full commercial package needs to be created so that the product or service becomes available to the client complete with any necessary ancillary elements. For example specialist installers, ancillary consumable materials, installation equipment, etc. may be necessary, along with structured distribution channels, and Jason Consultants supports the client and vendor in setting up this whole package to ensure that a sustainable market entry is achieved. This is of value to the client, for whom the technology and its benefits become readily available, as well as to the vendor who increases the sales of his technology.

Funding for technology transfer can be complex, with different drivers for the project at the different parties, as well as different needs and expectations. Clear funding plans, budgets, milestones and project management are essential to successful technology transfer. Jason Consultants has experience of applying all of these to achieve the results that benefit all parties. We can also provide access to financial institutions to provide finance where necessary, predominantly in the private-equity field.
