TUNNELING & DRILLING
TUNNELING | MICROTUNNELING | DIRECTIONAL DRILLING | UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES | SUBMARINE PIPELINE

The driving force of our Tunneling and Drilling business activity is the installation of underground pipes, cables and even structures using techniques that minimize surface disruption and environmental impact. Our expertise and experience in soft ground tunneling, microtunneling, pipe jacking, directional drilling and jacking underground structures is directed towards providing innovative, safe and cost-effective solutions where installation involves:

  • Installation at sufficient depth to make tunneling economic.
  • Installation under busy urban streets.
  • Crossings under waterways or other environmentally sensitive natural features.
  • Crossings under major transport arteries such as freeways/motorways and railway lines.
  • Locations where other constraints make conventional construction difficult or expensive.

By deploying our capabilities in the use of these techniques we are able to engineer installation solutions for our clients that involve minimal disruption to communities, traffic, the environment and other infrastructure while remaining cost-effective as well as functional and also minimizing risk.

Our expertise in new infrastructure installation encompasses feasibility studies, designing solutions, preparing specifications and contract documents, and supervising the installation phase of the works.

Microtunneling and Pipe Jacking projects are predominantly in environments where sewer installation is required with minimum surface impact, at great depth or in locations with difficult access such as sea outfalls. Projects have been undertaken in q very wide range of geographical, physical and geotechnical and groundwater conditions and with a wide range of pipe materials to meet a broad spectrum of users’ needs.

Tunneling projects are concentrated on utility tunneling diameters in soft ground geotechnical conditions presenting specific engineering challenges in terms of face and tunnel support and where risks must be managed actively to ensure safe and effective construction.

Projects utilizing Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) have been either small scale in-street installations for cable or other utilities or, more frequently, long crossings beneath waterways, wetlands, transport infrastructure or other natural or man-made features. The technique has developed rapidly and the frontiers of length, diameter and range of ground conditions continue to be extended. It is in projects that redefine these frontiers that our experience is of greatest value. Jason Consultants has undertaken major challenging HDD projects internationally.

The Jason engineering team has experience in over 15 large-scale Jacked Underground Structures. A range of innovative techniques offers an effective alternative to conventional methods and allows the infrastructure above to remain in service during the works. The techniques, many pioneered by our own engineers, enable construction of major access ways such as road underpasses directly under existing transport infrastructure in a wide range of geological conditions.
