PROJECT BRIEFS DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
|
DIRECTIONAL DRILLING MA WAN CHANNEL CROSSING, HONG KONG Jason Consultants were retained by Golder Associates of Hong Kong to provide specialist engineering advice for this challenging crossing below the main shipping approach to Kowloon container terminal. We developed the contract structure, designed and prepared specification and contract documents, and provided support and QA advice through the construction period. The installation, using directional drilling, was of two 450mm PE water mains inside 600mm diameter steel casings over a length of almost 1,400 metres through completely decomposed granite including a fault zone. The project was completed successfully following our proposals. Client: Golder Associates (Hong Kong) for Maunsell Consultants Asia
MISSOURI RIVER CROSSING, ST. CHARLES COUNTY, MISSOURI In conjunction with Sverdrup Civil Inc. Jason Consultants designed and prepared specification documents for the installation of a 42-inch diameter water pipeline across the Missouri River using horizontal directional drilling. Ground conditions varied from alluvium to limestone. The length of the crossing was approximately 3,500 ft. Client: Sverdrup Civil Inc.
SINGAPORE. ADAM ROAD & BUKIT TIMAH ROAD CROSSING For client IRISC Technical Services Jason conducted a technical review and evaluation of the construction techniques utilised for the pipeline installation using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The project involved the installation of a 600 mm diameter natural gas pipe within a 700 mm steel casing over a distance of almost 1,000 metres. Ground conditions were highly weathered to moderately weathered granite Client: IRISC Technical Services
BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON PARKWAY CABLE CROSSING Jason Consultants served as project manager for this ambitious project which involved the design and technical supervision of the installation of seven high-voltage electric transmission pipe-type cables in a 24-inch diameter bundle across a busy Interstate highway over a length of more than 2,000 feet. Client: Sargent & Lundy Engineers
PROVIDENCE RIVER GAS PIPELINE CROSSING Jason Consultants conducted a technical review and evaluation of the design, contracting and construction practices employed during the pipeline crossing of Providence Harbour in Providence, Rhode Island. The planned crossing was to drill a 36-inch diameter hole 3,800 feet in length using horizontal directional drilling. Client: GEI Consultants
HONOLULU. NIMITZ HIGHWAY CABLE INSTALLATION Working with electrical engineers Sargent & Lundy, Jason designed the trenchless installation of electric distribution lines using guided drilling in difficult soil environments, including lagoonal deposits and basaltic rock formations. The total length of the installation was over 4,000 feet. Specification documents and engineers estimate of cost were also prepared for the client. Client: Sargent & Lundy
CARMENS RIVER CROSSING, YAPHANK, NEW YORK Jason Consultants evaluated and designed the use of horizontal directional drilling for installing a 20-inch diameter gas transmission pipeline for a distance of 1,300 feet beneath the Carmens river. The area surrounding the river was considered wetlands and therefore extremely environmentally sensitive. Client: Long Island Lighting Co., New York
ABERDEEN WASTEWATER PROJECT Montgomery Watson retained Jason Consultants to provide technical support during the process of drilling contractor appraisal for a 700m long, 450mm diameter drilled Scottish sea outfall through hard rock. Jason evaluated the tenders received from drilling contractors, prepared technical questions and participated in the interview of drilling contractors prior to project award. A major element of the work involved the quantification and evaluation of risk related to drilling in rock and the development of suitable questions to put to tenderers to help assign and mitigate risk during the work. Client: MWL working on behalf of Balfour Beatty.
RINGSEND DOCK SOUTH 110KV CROSSING PROJECT, DUBLIN ESB International retained Jason Consultants as technical advisors for a 200m crossing of the River Dodder and Grand Dock near Dublin Port. The crossing was for a 110kV feeder cable and associated pilot cores. Jason evaluated alternative alignments and construction methods including deep tunnelling and horizontal directional drilling. Key factors included: limited site access, adjacent buildings and historic structures and tidal river conditions. Client: ESB International
EYEMOUTH WASTEWATER TRANSFER, TREATMENT AND Following drilling problems during construction of the sea outfall on this project, East of Scotland Water requested an independent assessment by Jason Consultants of the tender documents and directional drilling methods proposed and used by the contractor during the work in support of their contractual discussions. This work lead to Mike Kirby being called as an expert witness to support the Adjudication between the Owner and the drilling contractor. Client: East of Scotland Water
HOLYHEAD WASTEWATER TREATMENT SCHEME Montgomery Watson retained Jason Consultants to provide technical support during the process of drilling contractor appraisal for a design and build contract to install a 1100m long, 500mm diameter long sea outfall through hard metamorphic, abrasive and faulted rock. Client: MWL working on behalf of Galliford/Try. |
